Germany To Consider Extending Reformation Day Public Holiday

(Posted on Friday, November 27, 2009)

The Synod of evangelical Churches of Germany's State of Hessen has passed a motion asking the government to amend Article 1 of the Hessischen Feiertaggesetzes to make Reformation Day an official public holiday in the State of Hessen.

Calls to restore the Reformation Day public holiday, either in specific States, or as a national public holiday, were made in Berlin (25-Mar-2009), Schleswig-Holstein (01-Nov-2007), and Bavaria (07-Nov-2006).

As an aside, there are also recurring calls (21-Nov-2009 and 27-Nov-2007), from high-level elected officials, in Bavaria to restore the Buß- und Bettag public holiday.
