On Friday night, Honduras' Secretary of Education, Santos Elio Sosa, announced that the traditional, week-long September educational public holidays, were abolished for this year.

These week-long school and educational system public holidays, are traditionally observed the week that straddles September 15 (Honduras' Independence Day) and the, September 17, Día del Maestro (Teacher's Day).

Honduras also has a traditional week-long public sector holiday, this time for all public servants, during the week before Easter (03-Apr-2009) and less systematic public sector holidays in the period from Christmas to the New Year (19-Dec-2008).
