Iraq To Consider July 25 Public Holiday

(Posted on Saturday, June 27, 2009)

Source: The Kurdish Globe (Erbil)

The President of Iraq's Kurdistan Region, Massoud Barzani, has asked Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to declare July 25, 2009, a national public holiday, to coincide with the Kurdistan Region's parliamentary and presidential elections.

Even it it does occur, the declaration of July 25, 2009, as a national public holiday would have little impact as it is a Saturday, already a non-working weekday under a 2007 cabinet decree.

However, there is still the strong likelihood that Thursday, July 30, 2009, be declared a one-off public holiday, on the occasion of the national referendum on the country's security agreement with the United States (15-Jun-2009).
