This week, the States of Jersey will discuss a proposal drawn up by the Chief Minister’s Department to make Monday, December 28, 2009, a bank holiday instead of Boxing Day, as December 26 falls on a Saturday this year.
Recall that for the last few years (31-May-2004), the Legislation Committee of Jersey's Assembly has been considering the draft bill, "Draft Public Holidays And Bank Holidays (Jersey) Act 200-", which would mandate a day in lieu public holiday, following any fixed-date public holiday that occurs on a Saturday.
Though it has become an established practice to declare a day in lieu public holiday following any fixed-date public holiday that occurs on a Saturday, and most the Jersey online sources all assume it will be the case, there is currently no automatic provision to grant additional days in such circumstances.
As an interesting aside, the Guernsey States have also recently been petitioned to make Monday, December 28, 2009, a bank holiday (public holiday) instead of Boxing Day, as December 26 (11-Sep-2009).
