Malaysia July 14 Kelantan Electoral Public Holiday Declared

(Posted on Monday, July 13, 2009)

The head of the government of Malaysia's State of Kelantan, Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, has declared tomorrow, Tuesday, July 14, 2009, as a one-off public holiday, on account of the Manik Urai state seat by-election.

Officially, the announcement only covers the public sector (public holiday for all state government staff and federal government employees working in the state) but the Menteri Besar went on to say that private sector employees should also be given the day off and that "employers must not just think of profit".

Responding to criticisms that such a by-election did not warrant a public holiday, the Menteri Besar justified his declaration based on Penang State's similar declaration last year (24-Aug-2008) by saying that "this is not new as the Penang government had also done it for the Permatang Pauh by-election".
