The government of Nepal has announced a week-long public sector holiday starting today, Friday, September 25, 2009, to mark this year's Dashain Hindu festival.
As such, all government offices, schools and colleges will remain shut till October 1, while the general population will get a 4-day public holiday from September 25 (Fulpaati) until September 28 (Dashami).
These weeklong Dashain public sector holidays are in line with the reduction of public sector holidays for Dashain from 9 to 6 days (plus the Saturday weekly day of rest) recommended by various government commissions over the years (13-Jan-2001 and 07-Mar-2008), but less than the changes recommended by the committee formed to review public holidays, earlier this year (05-Feb-2009).
Although Dashain is celebrated from the day of Ghatasthapana the actual celebrations begin with Fulpaati, the seventh day of the festival.
