Poland's Law and Justice opposition party (PiS) has filed a resolution in the lower house of parliament, calling for September 17 to be made a national public holiday, in commemoration of the 1939 invasion of Poland by Russia.
For its part, the Civic Platform government has introduced a counter-resolution, which calls for a commemoration of those who defended Poland against the Russian invasion, but without making September 17 a national public holiday.
If a new public holiday were to be declared, most observers would expect it to be a restoration of the Epiphany public holiday, canceled by the Communist party after WW2. An attempt was defeated last year (17-Oct-2008, 22-Sep-2008, and 27-Jun-2008), but the issue has never really gone away (19-Apr-2009).
Another possibility currently under consideration would be to make April 2, the date of Pope John-Paul II's death, a new annual public holiday (07-Apr-2009).
