Senegal's president, Abdoulaye Wade, has asked Parliament to expedite the passage of legislation that would declare a new annual public holiday on the occasion of the Magal de Touba.
The Magal de Touba is a uniquely Senegalese Muslim festival that occurs about 20 days before the official annual public holiday of the Prophet's Birthday.
Currently, the entire country comes to a virtual standstill on that occasion (which starts the day before), but it is neither an official, nor a paid public holiday.
