Singapore's Manpower Ministry (MOM) has announced that it had been advised by the Hindu Endowments Board (HEB) that it had revised its announced date for the 2009 Deepavali public holiday from November 15 to October 17 (the date we have always been predicting).
Singapore had announced November 15 as the 2009 public holiday date for Deepavali 2009, early last year (25-Feb-2008) and we then immediately got in contact with Singapore's MOM and HEB to alert them, but it took almost a year for the confirmation to come through and for the Singapore authorities to act on our advice and correct the published date for Deepavali.
Note that there have often been changes to the announced date for the Deepavali public holiday in Singapore (04-Mar-2002, 11-Apr-2003, and 27-Mar-2008), but as far as our records go, the change has only been by one day, never by a full month.
For a detailed analysis of the 2009 Deepavali date calculations, see Professor Helmer Aslaksen's paper (Department of Mathematics, National University of Singapore).
