From recent media reports, it would appear that the recently announced, July 18, Nelson Mandela Day, will not be an official public holiday.
When the announcement of a new Nelson Mandela Day annual holiday on July 18 was made, earlier this month (04-Jun-2009), it was not clear if the holiday would be a non-working public holiday or not.
However, it is possible that the government may choose not to decide anything yet, as July 18 is a Saturday in 2009, and therefore the issue will not come to the fore until 2010, when July 18 is a Sunday, which would mean, as per the 1994 Public Holidays Act, that Monday, July 19, 2010, would be a day in lieu public holiday.
