A coalition of South African Indian cultural, religious and political leaders have asked the government of South Africa to declare a public holiday on November 16, 2010, to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first indentured labourers from India.
Other countries have in the past either declared one-off Indian arrival anniversary public holidays, such as Suriname (19-Sep-2008), or annual public holidays, as in Guyana (29-Apr-2004), Mauritius (26-Jul-2001), and Trinidad and Tobago (16-Feb-1996), or are being pressed to do so, as is the case in Fiji (16-May-2007).
