Late last night, the government of Sudan declared today, Monday, December 7, 2009, as a one-off public holiday to coincide with the the final day for voters to register for the upcoming presidential, parliamentary and local elections.
The date for these elections was set last month (25-Nov-2009), and last year's preparatory census was declared a one-off nationwide public holiday (11-Apr-2008), while the government of South Sudan (GoSS) gave civil servants a one-day public holiday on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, to enable government officials to mobilize for voter registration (11-Nov-2009 and 08-Nov-2009).
