UAE Confirms Moon Sighting And Public Holidays

(Posted on Sunday, September 20, 2009)

Late last night, the UAE's Minister of Justice, Dr Hadef al Dhaheri, announced that the Shawwal Crescent Committee had sighted the crescent of the new Moon and that "It has been determined that Eid [public holidays] begins on Sunday [September 20]".

This sighting, which confirms announcements made earlier this week (15-Sep-2009 and 17-Sep-2009), is purely formal, as the UAE follows the Saudi Umm al-Qura calendar that is based on astronomical calculations, rather than naked eye sightings.
