The UAE's Minister of Education and Chairman of the Federal Human Resources Authority, Humaid Mohammad Al Qutami, has announced that the Islamic New Year would begin on Friday, December 18, 2009, and that federal and government organisations would remain open on Thursday, December 17, 2009.

As per Cabinet Decision No. 17 of 2009, no holiday is given in lieu if a public holiday coincides with another holiday or falls in the weekend, which changed from Thursday/Friday to Friday/Saturday, in 2006 (31-May-2006).
