UAE Rules-Out New Year Day In Lieu Public Holiday

(Posted on Wednesday, December 30, 2009)

The UAE's Minister of Education and Chairman of the Human Resources Authority, Humaid Mohammad al-Qutami, has issued a circular confirming that the UAE's federal government ministries, departments and establishments will resume their duty on Sunday, January 3, 2010, after the January 1st Gregorian year public holiday.

This clarification that no day in lieu public holiday would be given, as was the case for the recent Islamic New Year (15-Dec-2009 and 14-Dec-2009), is based on Cabinet Decision No. 17 of 2009, that no holiday would be given in lieu, if a public holiday coincides with another holiday or falls in the weekend, which changed from Thursday/Friday to Friday/Saturday, in 2006 (31-May-2006).
