Last night, the UK Parliament approved a bill creating an additional one-off public holiday to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, in 2012.
The bill, introduced last month in the Commons by Tory MP, Andrew Rosindell, will add a public holiday for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, while the annual Spring Bank Holiday will be moved by a week to Monday, June 4, 2012, thus providing a four-day public holidays (or bank holidays, as they are called in the UK).
A competing bill had been introduced, last year (26-Jun-2008), which would have declared a combined Olympics And Diamond Jubilee public holiday, by making the 2012 Tuesday after the Summer Bank Holiday a public holiday.
The bill finally passed last night follows the same pattern as the one-off public holiday declared for the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 (19-Jun-2001 and 24-Nov-2000).
