The Ukraine government has declared the first day of the upcoming Muslim holiday of Uraza Bairam (End of Ramadan), on Sunday, September 20, 2009, a non-business day (aka. public holiday).
This follows last year's vote in the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (24-Nov-2008).
The Chairman of the Crimean Republican Information Committee, Shevket Memetov, further announced that since the first day of the public holiday, September 20, falls on Sunday, then Monday, September 21, 2009, would also be declared a non-business day public holiday.
According to Chairman Memetov, around 500,000 Muslims, including ethnic Crimean Tatars, Azerbaijanis, Uzbeks, Tajiks, and Volga Tatars, live in Crimea.
