Uzbekistan Announces Eid al-Adha Public Holiday Date

(Posted on Saturday, November 21, 2009)

The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, has signed the resolution "On celebrating the Kurban-hayit (the Eid al-Adha) in Uzbekistan", which specifies Friday, November 27, 2009, as the date of this year's Feast of Sacrifice public holiday.

With this announcement, the recent trend (02-Dec-2008 and 27-Sep-2008) of using the Saudi Umm al-Qura Islamic calendar, instead of a local Central Asian one, seems confirmed.

The festival of Eid al-Adha was made a national non-working public holiday as per the Decree of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On announcing Ruza Hayit a day off" No.UP-368 of March 27, 1992.
