Azerbaijani MP, Elmira Akhundova, has announced that she plans to introduce legislation to add a "Mothers' Day" public holiday to the official list of non-working public holidays in Azerbaijan.
This proposed new public holiday would be observed annually on April 28, the birth date of Azerbaijani Academician, Zarifa Aliyeva.
Considering the recent passage (05-Dec-2009) of passed the bill on "Amendments and annexes to the Labor Code", creating a new, "State Flag Day", annual non-working public holiday on November 9th, it is unlikely that another new public holiday will soon be added in Azerbaijan.
For 70 years, Azerbaijan celebrated April 28 as a public holiday, celebrating "the victory of revolution in the country, the date of its Sovetization and liberation of workers". The public holiday was abolished after the fall of the Soviet Union.
