Brazil Considering FIFA Public Holidays Bill

(Posted on Friday, August 27, 2010)

Source: Câmara dos Deputados (Brasilia)

The Committee on Education and Culture of Brazil's lower house of Parliament is currently considering a bill introduced by Deputy Felipe Bornier that would declare a public holiday on days when the Brazilian national football team played in the World Cup.

The aforementioned bill is very similar to one introduced in the spring (13-May-2010) by Brazilian PL deputy, Mendes Thames, and which would declare a series of additional June public holidays, every 4 years, to coincide with Brazil's participation in the FIFA World Cup.

Approval of either bill seems unlikely in view of the recent mood in Brazil's congress (09-May-2010 and 22-Nov-2009).
