  • Singapore 2026 Public Holidays Released
    Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM)

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has released the official list of non-working Singapore public holidays and bank holidays in Singapore for the upcoming calendar year 2026.

The aforementioned list of 2026 public holidays in Singapore, was released somewhat later than in the past, but not as late as last year when the 2025 list of Singapore public holidays was not released until the beginning of August 2024.

The 2026 list continues the trend of unreliable dates for the 2 Muslim public holidays of Singapore, ever since the October 2021 MUIS (Majilis Ugama Islam Singapura) communique stating that Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore had "agreed to adopt revised criteria of the astronomical calculation for the determination of the Islamic calendar from year 2022 onwards.".

Until 2022, the annual announcement of the annual official Islamic Calendar to be used in Singapore was usually a perfunctory affair, most often coming much later than the announcement by Singapore's MOM of the list of the public holidays for the same calendar year, and confirming the dates of the 2 Muslim public holidays announced by MOM, despite the initial list of public holidays announced by MOM always contains the mention "Subject to change".

But, as mentioned above, this orderliness has not been the norm in more recent years.

The date of the 2021 Hari Raya Haji (Feast of Sacrifice) was different in the MUIS listing, released in October 2020, as compared to the previous April's MOM list of 2021 public holidays.

And, in October 2021, MOM released an amended list of 2022 Singapore public holidays, following the decision by MUIS to move the 2 Muslim public holidays of 2022.

For 2026, the announced date of the Hari Raya Puasa is off by a day as compared to the lunar crescent visibility criteria announced in 2021 (namely that the new Moon crescent is expected to be visible if, at the time of the sunset that follows a new Moon, the Moon has a minimum altitude of 3 degrees and an elongation of 6.4 degrees).

On the other hand, the date of the 2026 Deepavali public holiday, which in past years was often incorrectly announced (off by a month in 2009), is correct in today's announced list of 2026 public holidays in Singapore.

The General Administration of Personnel and Administration of Taiwan's Executive Yuan has released its official annual calendar of official non-working public holidays in Taiwan for the upcoming calendar year 2026, in accordance with the "Implementation Measures for Memorial Days and Holidays" regulations (紀念日及節日實施辦法).

But, additionally, the General Personnel Office also revised the Points for Government Agencies to Handle Compensatory Holidays and Adjustment of Holidays in Response to Memorial Days and Holidays (政府機關配合紀念日與節日補假及調整放假處理要點), explicitly deleting the provision of "adjusting working days to holidays and making up for work" (調整上班日為放假日並補行上班), and instead only retaining compensatory holidays.

Recall that regulations adopted in March 2013, compel the Directorate General of Personnel Administration to make public the national holiday calendar for following year before June 1st of the previous year, though the 2023 public holidays were announced a week or so late, as has been the case for the past 3 years.

The government's decision applies to public administration bodies financed from the state budget and their employees, for whom a five-day working week is established from Monday to Friday. For municipal and private enterprises and organizations, the transfer of working days is advisory.

The current Lavian Labor Code stipulates that the Cabinet of Ministers must declare such bridge public holidays before July 1st of the preceding year. • Philippines House Votes 6-Year Barangay Elections Interval
Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines (Manila)

The Philippines House of Representatives has passed on third and final reading House Bill 11287, which proposes to extend the term of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three to six years.

The aforementioned bill, which was approved at the committee level, last December, would amend Section 42 of Republic Act No. 7160 to hold the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections by the second Monday of May 2029, instead of in October 2026.

Note that a conflicting Senate Bill (SB) 2816, had its third and final reading in January, and would set the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections every 4 years apart, most likely on the last Monday of October, as was the case from 2007 to 2013.

Normally, the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections should occur every 3 years, and have usually been accompanied by the declaration of a one-off public holiday.

However, over the past decade, these elections have often been rescheduled.

The 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections were supposed to be held in late 2016, but were twice postponed, once to 2017 and a second time to 2018.

Then in September 2019, three panels of the Philippines Senate approved moving the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections from May 2020 to May 2023. Eventually, the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections were held on October 30, 2023.

  • Western Australia Considering Public Holidays Shake-Up
Western Australia Department of Labour Relations and Commerce (Perth)

The Premier of the State of Western Australia, Roger Cook, has indicated that WA's public holidays could soon be realigned with those observed on the east coast, potentially as early as next year, and that that review may also introduce an additional public holiday.

Mentioned as on the shortlist for date changes are: WA Day, the King's Birthday, and Labour Day.

Recall that, last November, Premier Cook, had already indicated that he was open to the idea of moving the Western Australia Day public holiday closer to summer, stating that "I think it makes sense to explore how we might better align the date of the WA Day public holiday, particularly to coincide with our warmer months around summer", and adding that "I am open to reviewing the date of the public holiday in the future, as part of broader reforms that look at maximising any economic benefits".

Originally called Foundation Day until 2011, WA Day is observed on the first Monday of winter, and for the past few years, that date has seen heavy rains.
