The Dominican Republic's Cámara de Diputados (lower house of Parliament) has sent a bill to commission that would abrogate the 1997 "Ley No. 139-97 mediante la cual los días feriados del calendario que coincidan con los días martes y miércoles, jueves o viernes serán trasladados de fecha".
The bill, proposed by deputy Radhamés Castro was not approved in first reading and was sent to the Comisión Permanente de Trabajo for further review.
The practice of moving mid-week public holidays to the nearest Monday dates from 1997 (19-Jun-1997), which was based on the so-called Emiliani Law (02-Oct-2005).
Ever since its passage, the Ley No. 139-97 is regularly attacked (09-Feb-2010, 22-Nov-2009, 08-Nov-2009, and 24-May-2008) by many who think that moving religious holidays is blaspheme, while the move of historical national holidays is un-patriotic.
