Fiji Confirms Cancellation Of Upcoming Public Holiday

The government of Fiji has issued a communique confirming that the upcoming, May 28, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day public holiday had been cancelled as per the recently promulgated "Employment Relations Regulations 2010".

The aforementioned communique was made to stiffle the flow of enquiries following yesterday's announcement (24-May-2010) of the official list of public holidays in Fiji for 2011, a list which did not include the 2 traditional public holidays of National Youth Day and Ratu Sukuna Day.

There were also recent rumours of a May 24 public holiday, forcing Fiji's Minister for Education, Filipe Bole, to issue a statement reminding the public that John Wesley Day is not a public holiday (23-May-2010).

Two months ago (21-Mar-2010), Fiji's Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, had announced that the "Employment Relations Promulgation Act" would be amended to remove 2 annual public holidays from the list of official annual public holidays in Fiji; namely the National Youth Day public holiday, and the public holiday commemorating the Anniversary of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna's Death.
