Grenada Declares Carriacou Carnival Public Holiday

(Posted on Wednesday, February 3, 2010)

Grenada's Prime Minister, Tillman Thomas, after consultation with his Cabinet, and in accordance with the Bank Holiday Act Cap. 25, has declared a new regional public holiday for the Carriacou Carnival.

While most of Grenada celebrates Carnival in August, the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique celebrate it during the pre-Lent period, and had been clamoring for years for their Carnival to be declared a public holiday.

Thus, Monday, February 15, 2010, will be a regional public holiday in Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Note that this regional public holiday will only be on the first of the 2 days of Carnival, while the annual August Carnival is observed with a 2-day public holiday.
