Ireland's former deputy prime minister, Michael McDowell, has called for declaring July 12 as a national public holiday in the Republic of Ireland as well as in Northern Ireland.
There were no immediate comments from the Public Service Executive Union and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions which have been pushing for extra public holidays for years (05-May-2007).
