Kenya Declares August 27 Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, August 12, 2010)

Earlier this afternoon, Kenyan governmental spokesman, Alfred Mutua, announced that the government of Kenya had declared Friday, August 27, 2010, a one-off public holiday to give Kenyans time to witness the promulgation of the new Constitution.

Last week (08-Aug-2010), the Kenyan media were already reporting that, "according to impeccable sources", Friday, August 20, 2010, would soon be declared a one-off public holiday to allow Kenyans to witness the promulgation of the new constitution. But in the meantime, the date for the promulgation of the new Constitution was changed to August 27 (10-Aug-2010).

Note that the date of the recent constitutional referendum was also declared a one-off public holiday (30-Jul-2010), as was the second day of last year's census leading up to the referendum (23-Aug-2009).
