Nicaragua Declares September 13 Public Holiday

(Posted on Friday, September 3, 2010)

Late last night, Nicaragua's Minister of Labour (Ministra del Poder Ciudadano para los Trabajadores), Jeannette Chávez, announced that Monday, September 13, 2010, would be an additional one-off bridge public holiday for the public sector (para todas las personas trabajadoras del estado).

As per the official communique, this was done to link the weekend of September 11-12 with the annual public holidays of September 14 (San Jacinto Day) and September 15 (Independence Day). Contrary to what happened the last time a public sector holiday was declared (09-Jul-2010), the extra day off is to be deducted from the annual vacations tally for each civil servant.

As far as the private sector is concerned, the Minister's communique states that it will depend on case-by-case agreements between management and employees (En las empresas privadas prevalecerá lo que puedan acordar trabajadores y empleadores).
