Philippines' presidential spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, has announced that recently inaugurated President Benigno Aquino III was considering not declaring a day in lieu public holiday on August 23 on the occasion of this year's Ninoy Aquino Day.
A day in lieu public holiday had been declared last summer by Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA) in Proclamation 1841 (22-Jul-2009), in accordance with the 2007, Republic Act 9492, "An Act Rationalizing the Celebration of National Holidays" (25-Jul-2007 and 09-Aug-2007) which moves most of the non-religious public holidays to the adjacent Monday.
However, last month, President Benigno Aquino III announced that he would be reviewing the possibility of requesting Congress to amend the law allowing the moving of legal holidays (12-Jul-2010).
