Philippines Could Cancel August 30 Public Holiday

Philippines' presidential spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, has announced that, in addition to yesterday's cancellation of the upcoming August 23 public holiday, it was also possible that the upcoming National Heroes' Day, on August 30, might also be declared a regular working day.

This announcement was made a day after Philippines President, Benigno Aquino III, had issued Proclamation 13 that stipulates that the upcoming public holiday marking the death anniversary of Benigno Aquino Jr would be on Saturday, August 21, 2010, rather than the previously announced date of Monday, August 23, 2010 (11-Aug-2010).

For now, the matter is still under consideration, Malacañang remains non-committal, but spokesman Lacierda is quoted in the local media as saying that "We will issue another announcement. There is still no decision up to now. But we will decide on these things on a case-to-case basis".

Until 2006, with a few rare exceptions (28-Aug-2005), Heroes' Day was observed on the last Sunday of August, but beginning in 2007 its associated public holiday was moved to the last Monday of August, in accordance with the "holidays economics" of former Philippines President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, as set out in Republic Act 9492, "An Act Rationalizing the Celebration of National Holidays" (25-Jul-2007 and 09-Aug-2007) which moves most of the non-religious public holidays to the adjacent Monday.
