A draft bill had been introduced in the National Assembly by Socialist deputies, Teresa Sales and Maria do Rosário Carneiro, which would cancel 4 annual public holidays.
The bill, designed to make the Portuguese economy more attractive (economias mais atractivas e competitivas), would cancel 2 religious annual public holidays (Corpus Christi and All Saints Day) and 2 annual civil public holidays (October 5 and December 1st).
The next decrease in the total number of official public holidays in Portugal would however only be from 14 to 11, as the aforementioned bill would create a new annual public holidays on December 26 (to be named Dia da Família).
