The Governor of St Helena, Andrew Murray Gurr, has issued a proclamation declaring Friday, May 20, 2011, as a public holiday in lieu of the annual, May 20, St Helena’s Day public holiday which falls on a weekend in 2011.
The aforementioned proclamation was published in the The St. Helena Government Gazette Extraordinary (Vol. XLVIII. Published by Authority No. 28) and justifies the odd Friday day in lieu public holiday by referring to section 2(3) of the Public Holidays Ordinance which states that "if a public holiday other than Christmas Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the Governor shall, by Proclamation, direct that either the preceding Friday or the following Monday be observed as a public holiday in lieu of that Saturday or Sunday".
