Solomon Islands Declare August 25 Public Holiday

Early this morning, the government of the Solomon Islands declared tomorrow, Wednesday, August 25, 2010, as a one-off public holiday on account of the Prime Minister’s Election Day.

Last week (20-Aug-2010), Solomon Islands' Police Commissioner, Peter Marshall, had announced that he was in talks with the Ministry of Home Affairs in view of having a public holiday declared for Wednesday, August 25, 2010, the date of the upcoming election of the Prime Minister, to stop any repeat of the rioting and looting seen after the unpopular announcement of prime minister Snyder Rini in 2006.

Note that tomorrow's election of the Prime Minister is not a general election, but rather an election within the newly elected Parliament (28-Jul-2010) of a member of Parliament to serve as Prime Minister.
