South Africa's Statistician General, Pali Lehohla, has been quoted as proposing that the upcoming 2011 national census day should be declared a non-working public holiday.
By law, the dates of South African presidential inaugurations (18-Apr-2009) and national elections are non-working public holidays (10-Feb-2009 28-Apr-1999 and 24-Feb-2004).
However, the law does not mandate a public holiday for census day.
