The minister of Labor and Public Service for the Government of South Sudan (GoSS), Awut Deng Acuil, has declared Friday, July 30, 2010, as a national public holiday on the occasion of this year's Martyrs Day.
Sudan's GoSS has observed an annual Martyrs' Day public holiday commemorating the 2005 death of Dr. John Garang de Mabior for the last 3 years (30-Jul-2008).
A one-off public holiday had been declared in 2005, immediately after Dr. John Garang de Mabior's death (04-Aug-2005), but an annual public holiday was only declared 2 years later (31-Jul-2007).
