During this week's meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, has announced that he had signed a decree extending the 2-day annual Novruz, Spring Holiday, public holiday for a 3rd day, Tuesday, March 23, 2010.
The decree applies to both the private and public sectors ("all enterprises, institutions and organizations regardless of the form of ownership were instructed to comply with the decree").
Legally, and traditionally, public holidays that fall on a weekend in Turkmenistan do not give rise to a day in lieu compensatory public holiday.
However, this is the second time in recent months that such a decree was issued. Last autumn (10-Nov-2009), President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, signed the "Decree On The Kurban Bayramy Celebrations" which sets the Kurban Bayramy celebrations in Turkmenistan, for the period of November 28-30, 2009, with an additional, one-off, day in lieu, public holiday on Tuesday, December 1st, 2009.
