Uruguay's Executive has sent a bill to the Uruguayan Parliament to exclude the May 18 public holiday, in 2011, from the current rules that move mid-week public holidays.
Normally, in 2011, the Battle of Las Piedras, May 18, public holiday would have been observed on Monday, May 16, 2011. The aforementioned bill would keep this public holiday on its set date of May 18 in 2011, as it corresponds to the bicentennial of the battle of Las Piedras.
Note that, earlier this year (15-May-2010), the Uruguayan presidency sent a draft project under which the following annual public holidays would become regular working days: January 6, April 19, May 18, June 19, October 12, and November 2. In addition, one of the two days of Carnival would become a regular working day, and the Holy week public holidays to be reduced from 5 days to 2.
