Argentina Considering Moving August 15 Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, April 28, 2011)

Argentina's ministro del Interior, Florencio Randazzo, has announced that the Argentine government was considering changing the date of this year's public holiday commemorating the death of General José de San Martín from August 15 to another date, away from the upcoming August 14, 2011, presidential primaries poll day.

As the official date of the anniversary of the death of General de San Martín is August 17, it is likely that, if approved, this year's public holiday would move to Monday, August 22, 2011. Indeed, in a later statement, the Minister of the Interior of Argentina, Florencio Randazzo, stated that the move of the August 15 public holiday to the 3rd week of the same month was almost certain ("es casi seguro es que se cambie el feriado, a la tercera semana").

The August 15, 2011, date for the public holiday commemorating the death of General José de San Martín was decreed last year (03-Nov-2010) by Argentina's President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, and the decree was published in the Boletín Oficial (Número 32.020, Año CXVIII).
