Australia Rejects Adelaide Cup Public Holiday Change

The Premier of Australia's State of South Australia, Mike Rann, has announced that the Cabinet had once again resolved not to change the date of the upcoming Adelaide Cup public holiday.

Last year (15-Jul-2010), South Australia's Minister for Industrial Relations, Paul Holloway, had already announced that the 2011 Adelaide Cup public holiday would be, once again, observed in March, specifically on Monday, March 14, 2011.

However, in recent weeks, Thoroughbred Racing SA has pressed the state government to shift the event from the second Monday in March date and return the Cup, and its public holiday, to its former date in May.

In 2006, the Adelaide Cup Day public holiday was shifted from its traditional May venue to the second Monday in March (13-Jul-2005), following the Adelaide Cup having been rained out for the second year in a row (21-May-2004).

This change was made formal the following year (31-Aug-2006), as per the "Holidays (Adelaide Cup) Proclamation 2006" (published in the Gazette on 31 August 2006 at page 3062), by which Monday, March 12, 2007, was declared to be a public holiday and bank holiday instead of Monday, May 21, 2007, a change which was to be reviewed annually.

However, since the change in date, two of the Adelaide Cup Day public holidays have been on days above 40C while last year's Adelaide Cup Day public holiday was on a miserable grey day.
