Australia Public Holidays Amendment In Victoria

(Posted on Sunday, May 29, 2011)

Source: Legislative Council of Victoria (State of Victoria)

The Parliament of Australia's State of Victoria has passed on first reading "A Bill for an Act to amend the Public Holidays Act 1993 and for other purposes".

The aforementioned legislation follows-up on last month's (05-Apr-2011) announcement by Victoria's Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business, Louise Asher, that legislation would be introduced to the Victorian Parliament to allow regional councils to nominate either one full day or two half-day public holidays as substitutes for Melbourne Cup Day.

Recall that, three years ago (16-Aug-2008), the Victoria State government introduced the Public Holidays Amendment Bill 2008 to compensate regional Victorians in 28 regional councils which did not heretofore observe the Melbourne Cup public holiday or offer an alternative paid day off.
