Ecuador's President, Rafael Correa Delgado, has finally issued a decree declaring Monday, January 2, 2012, as a one-off non-working public holiday in Ecuador.
The aforementioned Decreto Ejecutivo 973 officializes the recent announcement (16-Dec-2011) that Monday, January 2, 2012, would be a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Ecuador (para que los ciudadanos puedan prolongar su descanso por la festividad de Año Nuevo ya que este 2011 cae en fin de semana).
However, the Decreto Ejecutivo 973 also specifies that this one-off public holiday in Ecuador will be compensated by declaring Saturday, January 7, 2012, as a regular working day.
Officially the decree only applies to the public sector, but the private sector is encouraged to follow suit.
