Ghana's Deputy Minister, Kwabena Akyeampong, has announced that Wednesday, September 21, 2011, marks Founder’s Day which will be observed as a non-working public holiday throughout the country.

September 21st, 2009, corresponded to the 100th birthday of the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and current President, John Evans Atta Mills, had announced his intention to create a new, September 21, public holiday, shortly after being elected (20-Feb-2009).

Shortly before the aforementioned 100th anniversary (03-Sep-2009), Ghana's President, John Evans Atta Mills, issued an Executive Instrument declaring Monday, September 21st, 2009, an official public holiday. This was repeated last year as well (20-Sep-2010).
