A former Jamaican Senator, Barbara Makeda Blake-Hannah, has called for the declaration of Friday, August 17, 2012, as a one-off official non-working public holiday in Jamaica.
According to the former Senator, the declaration of Friday, August 17, 2012, as a one-off official non-working public holiday corresponding to the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence could be compensated by cancelling the Labour Day public holiday.
In 1987, Senator Blake-Hannah had called for the 100th birthday of Marcus Garvey to be declared a one-off national non-working public holiday.
