Malawi's Chief Secretary to the Government in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Bright Msaka, has announced that President Bingu wa Mutharika had declared a 16-day period of public sector holidays from Friday, December 23, 2011, until Sunday, January 8, 2012, inclusively.

As per President Bingu's statement.these public sector holidays were declared (" in order to allow civil servants sufficient time to celebrate the Christmas and New year festive season with their families").

However, the aforementioned announcement rules-out any additional non-working public holidays for the private sector ("the President's special dispensation to civil servants is not a declaration of public holiday in Malawi in respect to those days").
