The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has declared that May 1st, Labour Day, would be an official public holiday in the Maldives from this year onward.
Note that the weekends in the Maldives are Fridays and Saturdays, meaning that the upcoming Sunday, May 1, 2011, public holiday will indeed be an additional non-working public holiday in the Maldives.
Although the Maldives government often declares one-off public holidays (22-Feb-2011, 21-Oct-2010, and 22-Feb-2010, to name only a few), the last time a new annual public holiday was added was a decade ago (08-Jun-2000) when the "Anniversary of the Day the Maldives Embraced Islam" public holiday was added to the list of official public holidays in the Maldives.
