Nicaragua 2011-2012 Year-End Public Holidays Announced

Nicaragua's Minister of Labour, Jeannette Chávez Gómez, has announced that MITRAB (Ministerio del Trabajo) had declared public sector holidays from Saturday, December 24, 2011, until Wednesday, January 4, 2012, inclusively.

This announcement, based on Article 76 of Nicaragua's Labor Code, has become expected annually (04-Dec-2010, 07-Dec-2009, 05-Dec-2008, 03-Dec-2007, 14-Dec-2006, 01-Dec-2004, and 05-Dec-2001), although the original legislation only extended the public sector holidays until January 1st.

But, as Christmas and New Year fall on a weekend, the period has been expanded by 2 days (sin afectar la cuenta de vacaciones por los días 24,25 y 26 de Diciembre del 2011 y los días 1, 2 de Enero del 2012).

In addition, Nicaragua's MITRAB also declared Monday, December 26, 2011, and Monday, January 2, 2012, as day in lieu public holidays for all sectors of the economy, both public and private ("Por tanto, el lunes 26 de Diciembre del 2011 y lunes 2 de Enero del 2012 son Feriados Nacionales con goce de salario").

The aforementioned announcement refers to "Artículo 66 del Código del Trabajo" although the said article only mandates a compensatory day, on a case-by-case basis, rather than this nationwide public holiday, which has become a regular, though not systematic, occurrence in recent years (14-Apr-2011, 29-May-2010, 15-Jul-2009, and 07-Sep-2008).
