Philippines Declare June 20 Public Holiday

(Posted on Friday, April 29, 2011)

Source: Philippine Information Agency (Manila)

Philippines President, Benigno Aquino III, has signed signed Proclamation 154 which declares Monday, June 20, 2011, as special non-working public holiday in the Philippines for the celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

Jose Rizal was born on June 19, but the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) requested that Monday, June 20, 2011, be declared as special non-working public holiday instead of June 19.

Rizal is honored in the Philippines with his own public holiday, but that annual public holiday is based on the date of his death. A few years ago (20-Jun-2009 and 02-Jan-2009), the Philippines Chamber of Deputies approved on third and final reading House Bill 5408 to amend the Administrative Code of 1987 to change the commemoration date of the Rizal Day public holiday from December 30 (the date when he was executed) to June 19 (his birthday). But this bill never went any further.
