Philippines Announces End of Ramadan Public Holiday

(Posted on Saturday, July 23, 2011)

Philippines' deputy presidential spokesperson, Abigail Valte, has announced that the President planned to declare Tuesday, August 30, 2011, as a national non-working public holiday on account of the upcoming End of Ramadan festival.

Spokesperson Valte did point out that August 1, 2011, the start of the upcoming month of Ramadan, would not be declared a national non-working public holiday.

Referring herself to Proclamation 84, listing the special and regular public holidays in the Philippines for the calendar year 2011, and signed by President Aquino at the end of last year (20-Dec-2010), Spokesperson Valte went on to say that Monday, August 29, 2011, would also be a non-working public holiday commemorating National Heroes’ Day, meaning that for those working a 5-day workweek, this will be a 4-day weekend. For those who usually work on Saturdays, however, Spokesperson Valte offered no hope, stating that "there is no plan for now to declare August 27, the Saturday before National Heroes’ Day, a holiday".
