Russian Supreme Court Cancels Religious Public Holidays

(Posted on Thursday, September 22, 2011)

The Russian Supreme Court has ruled as unconstitutional the 1992 law establishing non-working public holidays in the Republic of Bashkiria for the Eid al-Adha and the Eid ul-Fitr.

The declaration of regional, religious or ethnic, public holidays had been common in Russia's seven regions with a majority Muslim population (12-Nov-2010 and 25-Nov-2009) as well as in the republics of Kalmykia, Tuva and Buryatia, whose population is in the majority Buddhist (01-Feb-2011).
