Sri Lanka Declares April 15 Public Holiday

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Public Administration issued a circular today announcing that the government of Sri Lanka had decided to declare Friday, April 15, 2011, as a one-off special public and bank holiday.

Friday, April 15, 2011, corresponds to the day after the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Thursday, April 14, 2011). Combined with the annual Sinhala & Tamil New Year's Eve public holiday, on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, the aforementioned one-off public holiday will create a 5-day weekend (for those working on a 5-day workweek).

The official list of Sri Lankan bank and public holidays for 2011 was initially released last summer (07-Jul-2010). The list of official bank holidays in Sri Lanka was then amended, a couple of weeks later (21-Jul-2010), by Sri Lanka Banks' Association which declared an additional half day bank holiday to compensate the 2011 Tamil Thai Pongal Day public holiday falling on a Saturday.

In a later announcement, the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) declared Friday, April 15, 2011, as a one-off financial public holiday in the wake of the government's declaration of that same April 15 as a public and bank holiday .
