Sri Lanka's Labour Ministry issued a statement last night that there would not be an additional public holiday on Monday, May 2, 2011, to compensate the fact that the annual May Day public holiday falls on a Sunday this year.
However, the aforementioned Ministry statement bizarrely goes on to say that "the private sector is requested to give an additional holiday for employees".
Apparently, the "clarification" was felt necessary due to the recent declaration (06-Apr-2011) by Sri Lanka's Ministry of Public Administration of Friday, April 15, 2011, as a one-off special public and bank holiday.
Note that, as per the official list of 2011 bank holidays released (12-Jul-2010) and amended (21-Jul-2010) last summer, there will be a bank holiday on Monday, May 2, 2011, to compensate the fact that the annual May Day public holiday falls on a Sunday this year.
